In a pinch, it will work but not very well. Clarinet reeds are shorter than sax reeds and that extra length causes a vibration (they won't vibrate on the mouthpiece) problem. They can! In fact I find they work better than alto clarinet reeds. They seemed to squeak less or something. I used the vandoran traditional alto sax reeds and they were perfect. Yep! They can!
