It’s talent yes, but that talent needs to be trained in music. A person with talent can’t pick up an instrument and start playing. Then need to train with the instrument, and have a decent understanding of music theory.
I think it is. Some people just simply cannot do it. And whoever says that everybody is born with equal talent is completely wrong. That’s like saying anyone could play the guitar like Steve Vai, or anybody could write like Shakespeare.
You need some natural talent, but some knowledge of music theory is really helpful. Having said that, there are many amazing improvisers who can’t read music. The best way to get good at improvising is to play along to stuff and get a feel for which notes sound right. Jamming with other musicians really helps too – someone starts off with a chord sequence and everyone else joins in when they’re ready and you see what materializes. It’s a fun way to do it, and you end up learning things from each other to help your technique improve.
Improvisation is a natural talent. Some have it and some don’t. You can learn how to improvise but believe me, that comes from the heart and soul. I teach my student how to improvise by breaking the song in parts and teaching them how to go outside the melody.
Generally, if you have it in you, its much easier for the person to learn how to build around the melody than if you have no idea what improvisation is about. Same for piano but not for classic. Classic is generally a note-for-note written music sheet and we usually gauge a person on technique, precision etc… by having them play a certain classical piece. Much easier to follow on the music sheet and much easier to pinpoint errors.
Jazz impro comes from the soul just like other leads whether in blues or rock etc..
It can be.
If you know enough music theory about the chosen style and scales you could possibly improvise.
And it is also a natural talent thing as well.
I know i can do it. But a friend of mine who is top notch on the piano can’t do at all!
talent is a natural thing which is equal & same in all humans in the Universe the main thing is to Polish the talent…if you do more practice you will improve you talent…
so you do practice and improve your talent…………… Thanks
To a degree it is, but it generally requires a lot of study and practice to refine that natural talent. It’s like a good athlete. They need to be born with some natural talent and ability, but have to train a lot to take full advantage of that natural giftedness. Some people train but don’t have that natural talent and don’t succeed, some people have natural talent but either don’t recognize it or don’t train and don’t succeed.
