Hey all, I’m looking for advice on an alto saxophone. I used to play as a young one, so I’m not inexperienced but I’d still be a beginner, but I want something affordable I can take to intermediate level.
Melbourne’s full of standard-level Yamaha and Jupiters, and they seem reliable, but would I be better off looking at other makes for the same price?
I’m also looking at older saxophones, having heard good things about Conn and Buescher vintages. Any advice I could get on these and other makes would be appreciated.

1Yamaha’s saxophones are very durable and they are not a bad choice, but often the prices are very high purely because of the name.
Since you have experience, the new selmer saxophones come with extra keys that numerous other brands do not. This will allow you to expand your range.
Conn Is a good brand, but is predominantly a brass maker. I’d recommend it if your were buying a trombone, but I personally do not like the way a Conn alto feels.
If you go to a music shop, test the brands and see what you like the feel of. Stay away from eBay if you can

3I’ve been playing a Yamaha alto for 40 years, and I wouldn’t swap it for a new model.
I would go for a good (preferably old) Yamaha or Selmer in good condition.
I suggest you find an experienced sax player to look over any sax you buy before parting with your money.
You also need to get advice on your mouthpiece.

4while the older buescher saxes are great, parts for them are scarce.
i would go with an older selmer, or current yamaha,…or if you have cash-look into yanagasawa saxes

5I’d probably recommend staying off the Beuscers, because I presume you are buying them of Ebay and they will most likely need repadding, which is expensive, or there could be a host of other problems.
Yamaha makes great saxophones, You may want to look into their intermediate horns ( YAS-23 or YAS 475 links at bottom) Yamaha makes great durable instruments. I own a YTS 82Z which is their pro horn, and it’s amazing for it’s price.
I’ve not had good experiences with Jupiter, but that isn’t to say that it is a bad brand for everyone. They seem like they sacrifice important qualities for the instrument or aesthetics and other less important things.
Yanagisawa also makes great horns, the A901 is a little more expensive than the Yamahas but it is another high quality company.
You could also look at Keilwerths, ST 90 and EX90 are their student/intermediate models
I wouldn’t really recommend Selmer. They make great professional horns, but they really don’t have intermediate horns. You may find some old pro Selmers on Ebay for pretty cheap, but beware of reapairs needed to play.
Just remember you almost always get what you pay for. You are not going to find a 6000$ sax on Ebay for 600 dollars. I’d recommend looking online or at a local music store, because new instruments with warranties are the way you want to go.
