I plan to do my project on free jazz and avant-garde jazz. I have been playing guitar for several years, and have been playing jazz for about a year, so I have some knowledge of music and traditional jazz. I have never studied or researched free jazz however, and except for a few recordings I have heard, I know nothing about it.

I will research the place that free jazz has in the music community, how it came to be, and how and why it is not accepted by mainstream culture. I will also research its impact on those who have accepted it, and how they view it as an art form. It is a very odd and therefore controversial genre of music, many artists claim it to be the only form of music that is completely expressive, and others who frown upon it claim it to be meaningless noodling of rhythms and notes.

For my product I will get several musicians together who have never played free before, explain to them the basics about the philosophy behind the style, and then hold a group improvisation. After the session, I will talk to them again regarding how they feel about the results, if they felt it was mindless, or truly expressive. I will record the session, and also record the responses of the musicians before and after they had the experience.

This project will hopefully provide me with an understanding of the style and philosophy of the free jazz that was played by artists such as Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman starting in the sixties. I hope to further my knowledge regarding the diversity of music, and how it has evolved drastically to fit the needs of the people playing it.
