So my band director asked if i would be intereseted in joing jazz band and i told him i would think about it. I need to know by tuesday because thats when our registration forms are due. Any advice on wat its like would help.
Jazz music is very different from the music that we start out with. Not only the sound and style, but the way that it is read. What used to be 8th notes are not so. They become "swung" almost like triplets the first 2 notes being tied, the last not. But this is even not so. The articulation are different as well as the chord patterns, phrasings, and rhythm. It also depends on what you play. In jazz there are many opportunities for solos and improvisations. Try to find recordings especially ones with exposure to your instrument and let this help in your decision. Learning and trying any new genre of music is rewarding in itself.
You would have to be a serious ‘musician’ first of all. Next, a good improv technique is necessary. It is also completely, absolutely imperative to have lots of spare time before a successful program can be completed. These people are laid back, and mostly not obligated by normal terms to their local social circles to be a certain way.
jazz band is so much fun… you should try. of course it’s a great learning experience, but our jazz band has so much fun. i play piano, so i don’t always hear what’s going on, but my friend (who plays piano) and i make up our own fun.
WHAT DO YOU PLAY? Does he want you to join Jazz band because you have the right instrument and ability or just to get enough warm bodies to make the thing get started.
I started my first band when I was about 15 by just going to the music room during lunch hour and playing the piano.. little by little more musicians joined me and by the time we got to the Senior Year, our noon time jazz sessions were standing room only. Playing in a Jazz band is GREAT CONDITIONING and can really help you advance your musical abilities.
If you are comfortable and skilled in your instrument, yes. You need to be flexible, jazz is pretty different from concert band. It’s really fun, but it requires practice just like regular band. If you’re up for a fun challenge, join.
