I’ve decided to learn guitar as a new hobby. So the first step besides making the commitment is picking a guitar. I have a basic feel for music because I play Saxophone and piano.
First off, my price range is up to 0. I’d really like to stay in the 0 ballpark since this is my first guitar and I’m not entirely sure I can stay 110% committed. Also, I want one that I know is dependable and won’t be a hassle to me, a frustrated first-time player.
Right now, I am pretty set on playing acoustic guitar because I see that as very fitting for my music taste but I also understand that is a little bit more of a learning curve when compared to electric. So first question, do you agree with learning acoustic first? If you disagree with my decision, please persuade me different.
Secondly, which guitar should I go with. Right now, I am considering these three guitars:
1. Epiphone for 2

2. a used Gibson off of Ebay… please give advice on what I need to look for if you agree with this choice
3. used Fender Starcaster off eBay

4. some other cheap guitar, non name-brand
Which of those would you find best for a beginner?
Lastly, this is just something I pondered, are the fingerings for an electric and acoustic (6-string) the same? Or are they (slightly) different?
PS: Is this the right category?

1Since you are just starting out, you should go with an acoustic(it’s just better to start of with), unless you want to learn songs and soloing styles that only sound good with heavy distortion. They’re pretty much the same thing in terms of note placement on the guitar neck, except that electrics usually have a few more frets for higher notes. If your $ range ends at 200 dollars you should look for an epiphone or johnson or even ibanez acousic. But if you really want an electric, get an epiphone, squire(made by fender), or ibanez. these are all good brands of guitars to start off with.
– hope this helped!

2Acoustic or Electric? First off, if you want one or the other, like if you get TOTALLY STOKED about one, but not the other, then don’t even think, and get the one you WANT. You said that the acoustic is more fitting to your music taste, so STOP. Don’t think any more, and get an acoustic.
Get a Solid Top acoustic if you can. Its way better acoustically and makes it a better long term guitar. Its hard to find one for <$200, but I’ve included a link to a brand that makes great guitars with solid tops cheap. The quality will likely be better than epiphone.
The fingerings are logically identical between acoustic and electric, but even among acoustics each neck is different, and many guitars have different fret and string spacings. They will all feel somewhat different.
Good Luck Rocking,
John
